According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Lindsey Harding, the coach of the Stockton Kings, is scheduled to be interviewed by the Charlotte Hornets of the NBA for the role of head coach.

Wojnarowski reported that sources have confirmed that the Hornets were given authorization on Monday to have an interview with the G League Coach of the Year for the 2023-24 season, regarding their vacant head coach position. The revelation was also verified by a source within the league, as stated by The Athletic.

If Harding were to be hired, she would make history as the first female NBA head coach.

Last week, the Hornets made an announcement that their current head coach, Steve Clifford, will resign at the end of the current season. He will then transition into an advising role in the front office next season. The franchise has stated that they have already started searching for a new head coach.

ESPN reports that the Hornets have received authorization to conduct interviews with David Adelman, an assistant from the Denver Nuggets, Jordi Fernandez, an assistant from the Sacramento Kings, Charles Lee, an assistant from the Boston Celtics, and Kevin Young, an assistant from the Phoenix Suns.

The Hornets refrained from providing any comments to CNN regarding their potential coaching prospects. CNN has contacted Harding and the Stockton Kings to request their comments.

Although Harding would make history as the first woman to be appointed as an NBA head coach if Charlotte were to hire her, she is not the first woman to have been considered for the position.

Becky Hammon, the coach of the Las Vegas Aces, made history as the first full-time female assistant coach in the NBA when she joined the San Antonio Spurs under Gregg Popovich. She interviewed for several NBA head coaching positions before ultimately transitioning to the WNBA, where she has achieved great success by winning consecutive championships in 2022 and 2023. Harding serves as the coach for the Sacramento Kings’ affiliate team in the G League, which is the official minor league of the NBA. She recently completed her inaugural season in the position and led the team to secure the top spot in the Western Conference. However, they were ultimately defeated in the conference finals by the Oklahoma City Blue.

She had the distinction of being elected G League Coach of the Year, making her the first woman ever to get this honor. Stockton had an outstanding regular season record of 24-10, which was the best in the league.

In June of last year, she was selected as the head coach of the Stockton squad, while Anjali Ranadivé was appointed as the team’s general manager. This was a historic moment for the G League, since it was the first time that two women were leading a G League franchise.

Prior to her current position, Harding served as an assistant coach and player development coach for Stockton’s parent organization for a duration of four seasons.

In addition, she has served as a player development coach and scout for the Philadelphia 76ers. Furthermore, she possesses international coaching expertise, having previously coached the women’s national team of South Sudan for a period of time before transitioning to her present role as the coach of Mexico’s women’s national team.

Prior to embarking on a coaching career, Harding achieved success as a player. She was selected as the first overall pick in the 2007 WNBA draft after an exceptional career at Duke University, where she received the 2007 Naismith College Player of the Year award and had her No. 10 jersey permanently removed from circulation.

Throughout her nine-year career, she accumulated a total of 270 appearances in the WNBA. Additionally, she showcased her talents internationally by playing in Turkey, Lithuania, and Russia. She also had the honor of representing the Belarus women’s national team at the 2016 Olympic Games.
