This weekend, Kristen Wiig hosted the long-running NBC sketch show for the fifth time, and she did so with a little bit of assistance from some enormous stars. As a result, she was inducted into the prestigious “Saturday Night Live” five-timers club in a grand and impressive manner.
Matt Damon, Ryan Gosling, Jon Hamm, Martin Short, Paul Rudd, Will Forte, Fred Armisen, and the iconic creator of Saturday Night Live, Lorne Michaels, who seldom makes on-screen appearances, all made an appearance during this week’s broadcast to present Wiig with her midnight blue velvet members-only jacket.
Wiig was getting excited to receive the honor when Rudd, who was wearing one of the jackets himself, interrupted her. Rudd said that he “heard a rumor” that she might be doing “one of those five-timer sketches featuring awesome celebrity cameos,” and he asked if there is “like, a script or something I could look at for that?” Wiig answered that there is.
In a contrite manner, Wiig responded, “Oh, no. I’m sorry, but I don’t believe that we will be conducting one of those…”
Paula Pell, a longstanding former writer for Saturday Night Live, also made an appearance and quipped that she thinks it’s great that Wiig is so thrilled about her jacket because “they basically hand those out to everybody like free maxi pads.”
Wiig was perplexed by Damon’s appearance then because he was wearing a five-timer jacket, despite the fact that he had only hosted twice. But he stated, “Lorne said the first time that I hosted it was so good, it counted for three,” and that his second time wasn’t as good as the first time, but it still counted as two. He then went on to say that according to his calculations, “that’s five dollars, baby.”
Wiig made a joke about how it “doesn’t really seem fair” that Damon would receive a jacket after just making two appearances as a presenter. “I have worked hard for this, right? When it comes down to it, does this jacket still have any significance?
Michaels was then surrounded by Hamm, Forte, Short, and Armisen, all of whom were wearing five-timer club jackets. This made Wiig even more frustrated when she realized that none of these individuals had ever hosted five times.
With that being said, Forte stated, “Yeah, but together we’ve hosted five times.”
Damon then went to the platform to encourage Wiig, “You should really feel proud of yourself.” Wiig expressed her disappointment by stating that she no longer thought that her introduction was “that special.” After that, he continued to make a humorous statement that Wiig is the youngest person to enter the club. Wiig responded by stating that this is not true, as Emma Stone, who is younger, was only recently inducted into the club. Following that, Damon made a ludicrous suggestion that Wiig is the first woman to apply for membership.
All of Wiig’s special guests eventually joined her on stage to sing a song, and they all did so together. Wiig began singing, “And there’s one thing I know is true, I wouldn’t be here without all of you,” but she was quickly interrupted once more, this time by Gosling, who will be hosting the show the following week.
As he appeared onstage next to Michaels, the “Barbie” actor was perplexed by the fact that he was also wearing a jacket. The question was posed to Michaels, who responded with a positive nod. “Are you sure?” The statement that he made was, “I mean, I haven’t even hosted three times yet, it seems unfair.”
After that, Gosling made his way over to Wiig, where he had the privilege of presenting her with a jacket that was uniquely hers. In addition to that, he rolled it for her.
A number of prominent celebrities, including Rudd, Stone, Tom Hanks, Steve Martin, Tina Fey, Will Ferrell, Ben Affleck, and Melissa McCarthy, are also members of the elite club. Wiig is the latest addition to this group.
During the seven years that spanned from 2005 to 2012, the star of “Palm Royale” was a part of the cast of Saturday Night Live. After she left her role as a series regular, she went back to hosting in the years 2013, 2016, and later twice in the year 2020.
On April 13, Gosling will be hosting the next episode of Saturday Night Live, which will also feature Chris Stapleton as a musical guest.
