Roma Hornery Death, Obituary – Roma Hornery, the beloved mother of Sonia Hornery MP and a cherished member of the Wallsend community, passed away peacefully yesterday morning. Roma’s life was a testament to hard work, resilience, and generosity. Born into challenging circumstances, Roma spent much of her early life in an orphanage. Despite these hardships, she never allowed bitterness to overshadow her spirit. Instead, she channeled her experiences into a strong work ethic and a commitment to her values, which she passed on to her children.
Roma dedicated a significant portion of her working life as a school cleaner, where her diligent nature and dedication were evident. Her work ethic and Labor values profoundly influenced her daughter Sonia, who carries forward Roma’s legacy in her public service. Outside of her professional life, Roma had a vibrant personality. She had a keen sense of fashion and always dressed elegantly. Her love for the simple pleasures in life, such as a good cappuccino and the occasional cigarette, brought joy to her everyday routine.
A passionate soccer fan, Roma’s enthusiasm for football was evident through her support for her brother Steve’s team, Westy Bluebells, and her unwavering loyalty to the Newcastle Jets. She avidly followed the team’s progress, regularly reading the back pages of the Herald to keep up with the squad. Roma’s generosity knew no bounds. From a young age, she took on the responsibility of caring for a large family, extending her kindness to cousins and others who needed a place in the Hornery home.
Her generous spirit was perhaps most poignantly expressed through her habit of giving away her own clothes to those who admired them, ensuring they felt appreciated. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the nurses and hospital staff who provided exceptional care during Roma’s final weeks. Her daughters and their families will miss her deeply, as will all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving her.
Roma Hornery’s legacy will live on through the lives she touched and the values she imparted. She will be remembered with love and admiration by her family, friends, and community.
