Heartfelt/Social Media Tribute
Following His death, many friends and family members took to their social media handles to express shock and disbelief. Describing how he will be missed and how impactful he has been in their lives, a friend wrote thus “I for sure love my fire family.
I remember when I took my Captain promotion a few days later I saw him on a run. He was with his engine and me with the bus and the last thing he said offhandedly “Anything else you need Cap”? I turned around to see a smile and an outstretched hand. Can’t tell how great that made me feel that’s the man we will miss. I wish I got a chance to tell him how much that meant to me. Always being in the fire family line as below to offer a like. Strike the bell brother Matt Kunkle you will be missed.”
Another wrote “Rest in peace my friend. You were there for me when Brad died and continued to be. You showed up to honor him and comfort me. Just a couple of months ago you gave me the biggest hug at the firefighter memorial ceremony that I will cherish forever. I will now honor you the way you honored Brad. I wish I could hug you again and help you. Such an unbelievable, unimaginable loss and prayers for your family are just not enough. I you Cedar Rapids Fire Captain Matt Kunkle.”
