Seattle Safeway Shooting, Death – After a reported exchange of gunfire at the Capitol Hill Safeway early Sunday evening, Seattle Police shut down the grocery store and the corner of 15th and John. There were no casualties discovered on site. Twenty-five minutes after that, someone dialed 911 to report a man near 12th and Fir with a gunshot wound to the leg.
As shoppers and passers-by rushed for shelter in the parking lot and inside the store, authorities were alerted to what seemed to be a gunfight at 15th and John shortly after 5 o’clock in the afternoon. Police in the vicinity cordoned off a sizable portion of Williams Place Park and the parking lot after discovering numerous expended shells and at least one unfired round.
Updates from the East Precinct radio indicate that at least two armed suspects were involved in the gunfight, and one of them is said to have fled northbound on a rented scooter. Twelve minutes after the Safeway call, officers responded to a report of a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg at 12th and Fir. Responding first responders from Seattle Fire Department treated the patient and took him to a nearby hospital.
Although it was initially unclear if the instances were distinct shootings, one 911 caller did mention a group of people who might be suspects fleeing the scene around 12th and Fir. The police did not make any arrests. A radio report said that Seattle police were looking into the likelihood that the Capitol Hill shooting involved a Glock handgun that had been reported stolen earlier in the day.
