Bill Ellerbruch Obituary, Death – Negaunee Public Schools (NPS) Superintendent Dan Skewis informed the community about a teacher’s death and student support services. Skewis announced Thursday that NPS instructor Bill Ellerbruch had committed suicide as a police inquiry into charges of inappropriate conduct with a former high school student was underway.
Skewis stated, “We believe in transparency and accountability, and have an obligation to keep our families informed. Ellerbruch taught high school math and science, per NPS.org. When Ellerbruch announced his immediate retirement, the superintendent claimed the district was ready to place him on leave pending the investigation.
Wednesday evening, Skewis added, “we were informed by the Negaunee Police Department that Mr. Ellerbruch had taken his own life.” We know this news may shock and worry our school community, so we are sending counselors and psychologists to help.
Negaunee High School will offer counseling from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 2. Negaunee Public Schools investigates all inappropriate or unlawful behavior.
Skewis said he will cooperate with local law authorities as necessary. A Negaunee Police Department official confirmed the NPS release’s contents but declined to discuss the inquiry.
“Our hearts today go out to all the individuals affected by this situation,” added Skewis. “Please contact us directly if you or someone you know needs support during this difficult time. We invite anyone with more information to contact our school administrative office or the Negaunee Police Department.” The non-emergency Negaunee Police number is (906) 475-4154.
