Thomas Berry Obituary, Death – A volunteer firefighter lost his life while responding to a crash on Tuesday evening near Georgetown on Route 9 (Lewes Georgetown Highway) near the intersection of Asphalt Alley, according to the Delaware State Police. State troopers said the accident happened on August 13th, just before 4:30 p.m. Someone has died, according to the police.

Officials in Sussex County confirmed late Tuesday night that the casualty was a volunteer firefighter who had responded to the accident. After the accident two miles east of Georgetown, Thomas Wilson Berry III reportedly stopped to help another driver. This is according to officials from Sussex County. Fruit was twenty-three years old.

The death of a young guy who was so committed to serving his community right up until the end has left everyone in County Council President Michael H. Vincent’s words abridged. Vincent had been a volunteer firefighter for many years. Everyone here at County government, as well as his friends and coworkers, will never forget his heroic act of kindness during a time of crisis.

Deputies from the Georgetown and Ellendale Fire Companies confirmed that Berry volunteered as a firefighter for Sussex County.

“That training and his response as a volunteer firefighter no doubt served Mr. Berry as he moved into action after coming across the crash on his way back to County offices following a field assignment earlier in the day,” according to officials.

Several fallen power wires and a utility pole in the middle of the road were photographed by Chopper 16. Nearby, an automobile appeared to have sustained damage to its front end. As of Tuesday night, the crash investigation was ongoing, and the Lewes-Georgetown Highway remained closed. In order to determine the cause of death, the police are currently awaiting the Medical Examiner’s determination. The flags of Sussex County will fly at half-staff today in memory of Berry.
