Mackenzie Corbin Death, Obituary – It is with deep sorrow that Wilmington College announces the passing of one of its cherished students, Mackenzie Corbin, a sophomore agribusiness major from South Salem, Ohio. Mackenzie, a vibrant and active member of the Sigma Alpha sorority, passed away overnight, leaving a profound impact on the campus community. In response to this heartbreaking news

Wilmington College President Corey Cockerill shared a heartfelt message with the campus, emphasizing the gravity of the loss and the importance of coming together as a community during this challenging time.  In his message, President Cockerill expressed the deep sorrow felt by all who knew Mackenzie and encouraged the community to support one another.

 Message from President Corey Cockerill: 

“Dear Members of the Wilmington College Community, We have some profoundly sad news to share with our campus community. One of our students, sophomore Mackenzie Corbin, passed away overnight. She was an agribusiness major from South Salem, OH, and a member of Sigma Alpha sorority.

Classes for Monday (Aug. 19) are canceled, and professional counselors from the Counseling Center will be available today through 8 p.m. and on Monday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The schedule is below. Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to stop by anytime.

– T. Canby Jones Meetinghouse — for Sigma Alpha sorority members through 8 p.m.
– McCoy Room of Kelly Center, Thomas Lounge in Pyle Center, and Rooms 148 and 149 in the Center for the Sciences and Agriculture – for all campus community members

Beginning Tuesday, students may make appointments with the Counseling Center. Please keep Mackenzie’s family and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.  A Life Remembered 

Mackenzie was more than just a student at Wilmington College; she was a bright light in the lives of those who knew her. Her passion for agribusiness was evident in her dedication to her studies and her involvement in campus activities. As a member of Sigma Alpha, Mackenzie was known for her leadership, kindness, and the genuine care she showed towards her sorority sisters and peers.

Her sudden passing has left the Wilmington College community reeling, and her loss is deeply felt by students, faculty, and staff alike. To honor her memory, the College has made arrangements for counseling support to be available throughout Sunday and Monday, ensuring that all members of the community have access to the help they may need during this time of grief.

 Coming Together in Grief 

In light of Mackenzie’s passing, the College has taken the extraordinary step of canceling classes on Monday, August 19th, to allow the community to come together in mourning. Several locations on campus, including the T. Canby Jones Meetinghouse, McCoy Room, Thomas Lounge, and CSA Rooms 148 and 149, have been designated as spaces where students, faculty, and staff can gather, seek counseling, and support one another.

The College has also encouraged students to begin making appointments with the Counseling Center starting Tuesday, ensuring that ongoing support is available to those who may need it.

 A Community Mourns 

The loss of Mackenzie Corbin is a tragedy that has touched every corner of Wilmington College. As the campus mourns, the administration, faculty, and students alike are reminded of the importance of holding one another close and supporting each other through this difficult time.
