According to a video recorded by a GBH News reporter, Senator Elizabeth Warren expressed her belief last week that international courts may construe Israel’s conduct in Gaza as a genocide. She made this statement after stating her opinion that “what Israel is doing is wrong.”
Warren expressed her belief that if the situation is examined from a legal perspective, it is likely to be classified as genocide. She stated that there is sufficient evidence to support this classification. Warren made these remarks in answer to a question from an audience member at the Islamic Center of Boston, who asked for her opinion on whether she believes Israel is engaged in genocide.
“To me, it is of greater significance to assert that Israel’s actions are incorrect.” It is incorrect. Deliberately depriving children of food within a civilian community with the intention of coercing them to comply with your desires is morally incorrect. Warren, a Massachusetts Democrat, expressed disapproval of the act of deploying 2,000-pound bombs in heavily populated civilian areas. “I believe that I can construct a more compelling argument by providing a detailed analysis of the observed behavior and expressing my judgment on its ethical validity.” Warren also expressed her desire to move people beyond a debate centered around labels.
A representative for Warren clarified to Politico that her remarks pertained specifically to the ongoing legal proceedings at the International Court of Justice, and did not involve expressing her stance on whether genocide is taking place in Gaza.
CNN has contacted Warren’s office to request a comment.
In January, the International Court of Justice ruled in favor of six urgent measures, instructing Israel to take all necessary actions to prevent any conduct that could violate the 1948 Genocide Convention, and to ensure that its force does not engage in genocidal acts in Gaza.
Warren has voiced disapproval of the Biden administration’s policy with Israel, namely advocating for an immediate cessation of hostilities and insisting on imposing certain requirements for future assistance to the United States’ partner.
Following the deaths of seven World Central Kitchen assistance workers in an Israeli airstrike, Warren expressed on X that help workers embody the finest qualities of humanity and should be safeguarded. The organization @WCKitchen is endeavoring to provide nourishment to individuals experiencing severe hunger in Gaza. The administration led by Netanyahu must cease the practice of conducting bombings without making careful distinctions or judgments. We require an urgent cessation of hostilities and the prompt delivery of substantial quantities of humanitarian assistance.
